vokalensemble NovoCanto

When speaking about NovoCanto, critics use terms such as "exquisite sense of tonal colour and expression", "finely nuanced sound pattern", "marvellous sensuality of sound", well-balanced choral sound", homogeneous overall sound accompanied by colourful and transparent interpretation and stylistically confident phrasing", "well-pitched intonation", "great flexibility in sound and technique" - qualities that the chamber choir has acquired throughout numerous projects since its establishment.

The Austrian vocal ensemble NovoCanto was founded in 2000 with the intention of interpreting literature from the field of Early Music that received little attention in a stylistically confident way. Since then, the ensemble has also proven its competence for choral pieces from both the Romantic period and the present.

The artists come from all regions of the Tyrol, most of them are graduates from the Mozarteum University of Salzburg or the Tyrolean State Conservatory and many work as full-time music educators.

A cornerstone of our project-based work is the collaboration with international specialists. In the past, concerts have been conducted by Frieder Bernius, Howard Arman, Attilio Cremonesi, Kasper de Roo, Christophe Rousset, to just name a few. The ensemble works with internationally renowned ensembles, like the Hilliard Ensemble, the French Baroque orchestra Café Zimmermann, Les Talens Lyriques, the orchestra Tiroler Barockinstrumentalisten, the ensemble Windkraft, the Hungarian Baroque orchestra Capella Savaria, the Neue Hofkapelle Graz, Camerata Europæa etc.

Since its establishment, numerous stylistically confident performed innovative and specialized programmes as well as live broadcasts for radio and TV and the production of sound carriers have helped the choir to achieve recognition far beyond the Tyrolean region.

NovoCanto received invitations to festivals such as Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik, Baroque Festival Varazdin, Klangspuren Schwaz, Tiroler Barocktage and others.

The chamber choir’s cast consists of 16 singers and can be extended or reduced according to the repertoire. NovoCanto has already performed many pieces dedicated to the choir itself and composed by well-established contemporary artists (for example, Christoph Dienz or Manuela Kerer). Our repertoire covers sacred literature from six centuries as well as secular pieces ranging from the scenic Baroque opera to experimental music of the 21st century.

The choir works intensively for the regional cultural scene - often in collaboration with artists from different genres. Well-respected concert concepts outside of the mainstream prove our efforts for an active participation in the Tyrolean vocal scene.
